USS Hopewell (DD-681) on fire, Corregidor, 1945
Here we see the Fletcher class destroyer USS Hopewell (DD-681) on fire after being hit by gunfire from a Japanese shore battery during the attack on Corregidor on 14 February 1945. At the time she was helping to clear mines from Mariveles Harbour, and had moved in to help the damaged minesweeper YMS-48, when she was hit four times. Her gun control station was put out of action and she suffered seventeen casualties, although she was able to remain in action for a few more days before leaving for repairs.
