USS Evans (DD-552) at sea, 28 June 1943
This picture shows the Fletcher class destroyer USS Evans (DD-552) at sea, and is dated to 28 June 1943, six months before she was actually commissioned. If the actual date is 28 June 1944 then she was serving with the screen for the aircraft carriers taking part in the invasion of Saipan. This date seems much more likely, and would explain why several other warships can be seen in the distance.
