USS Ernest G Small (DD-838) losing her bow, 1951
Here we see the bow breaking off the Gearing class destroyer USS Ernest G. Small (DD-838) on 11 October 1951, four days after she hit a mine while bombarding Hungnam in Korea. Once the damaged bow came off she had to be towed backwards 300 miles to Japan for temporary repairs that allowed her to get back to Long Beach where she was given a new bow.
