USS Downes (DD-375) bombarding Marcus Island

USS Downes (DD-375) bombarding Marcus Island
Here we see the back of the forward 5in/38 guns on the Mahan class destroyer USS Downes (DD-375) firing to starboard during a bombardment of Marcus Island on 9 October 1944. As can be seen, a single man could just about carry one of her 5in shells. The gun shield looks good, but as this view shows would have provided fairly limited shelter for the large gun crew!
