Kamikaze hit, USS Belleau Wood (CVL-24), 1944
Here we see the Independence class carrier USS Belleau Wood (CVL-24) after she was hit by a kamikaze off the Philippines on 30 October 1944, just after the start of organised suicide attacks. Ninety two men were killed in the initial attack or the fires it started.
