Radar Array on USS Ault (DD-698), July 1945
Here we see the radar array on the Allen M Sumner class destroyer USS Ault (DD-698) in July 1945, with the Trainer from the Mk 37 gun director standing up in his position. The large rectangular antenna directly above him is for the Mk 12 direction finding radar while the 'orange peel' antenna to the left is for the Mk 22 high finding radar. Above them are the antenna for the SG and SL radar sets. The small curved antenna is for the SG surface search radar, while the large flat array is for the SL surface search radar, which had longer range but couldn't detect objects at very close range.
