Steam Yacht Liberty, c.1914
The Steam Yacht Liberty was a luxury yacht that was taken over by the Royal Navy during the First World War. She was built in 1908 for the publisher Joseph Pulitzer. After his death in 1911 she was bought by James Ross, a Scottish-Canadian businessman and then in 1914 by Courtenay Morgan, the recently installed third Baron Tredegar. After the outbreak of the First World War she was loaned to the Royal Navy, spending most of the conflict serving as a hospital ship (HMHS Liberty). For some of the war Lord Tredegar served as her captain.
