SD2 Butterfly Mine, Anzio, 1944
Here we see a German SD2 Butterfly Mine, the first cluster bomb to be used in combat. This example fell into the Anzio beachhead. A large number of these small bombs was carried in a single container and released at altitude. The bomb (left) dangled below a set of wings (right), with two fixed curved wings (one of which can be clearly seen) and two angled circular wings. These circular wings caused the entire structure to rotate, arming the bomb.
