HMCS Uganda refueling in the Ryukyus
Here we see HMCS Uganda taking on fuel during operations in the Ryukyus in 1945. The Uganda was a Fiji class light cruiser armed with twelve 6in guns in four triple turrets. The rear turret is clearly visible here, the second from rear a bit obscure. The picture was taken from a British battleship which was also taking on fuel from the tanker in between. A US Destroyer is seen on the left bringing mail for the cruiser. The single funnel suggests it is a pre-war type, the sides look like either the Somers or Sims class. In the original photo the number ?14 might be visible, making her USS Russell DD-414, a Sims class destroyer that was operating in the right area at the right time.
