HMAS Waterhen crippled off Sollum

HMAS Waterhen crippled off Sollum

Here we see the crippled W-class destroyer HMAS Waterhen, taking on water after being hit by a bomb from an Italian Stuka off Sollum on 29 June 1941 during an attempt to run supplies to Tobruk. At this stage there was still some hope of saving the ship, but on the following day, while she was being towed by HMS Defender, she rolled over and sank.

This picture comes from the collection of the Australian War Memorial, and is in the public domain.
