This formal picture is of Sgt. D. MacKay of No.144 Squadron. Note the 'Observer' aircrew brevet (the 'O' with a wing), which was used for navigators in the first part of the Second World War. When he was killed he was serving as an air gunner while a more experienced navigator guided the aircraft.
Sadly Sgt. MacKay was killed when his aircraft, Hampden P4368 of No.144 Squadron, was lost in the IJsselmeer near Kampen in the Netherlands late on 10 August 1940 during a raid on Homberg. On the day MacKay, who was trained as a navigator, was acting as an air gunner.
