ATS operating telescope on British coast
The original wartime photograph says that this picture shows members of the A.T.S. operating a range finder at a battery on the south coast during the battle against the V.1 flying bomb. However the equipment is probably an Aircraft Identification Telescope Mk. III, which was used to detect the height and bearing of a target rather than the range. Range finders look similar, but with the forward looking lenses at the far ends of the long tube, to give two slightly different angles to the target which can then be used to work out range. On this machine the lenses are too close together to be useful for range finding.
