Medal Ceremony in 78th Fighter Control Squadron (1 of 5)

Here we see the men of the 78th Fighter Control Squadron ready for a medal ceremony, somewhere in the Mediterranean Theatre. The location is unknown, but can be placed in Italy as in a later picture one of the men is shown with five overseas service stripes, meaning he had been serving overseas for two and a half years, dating the picture to the second half of 1944.

Many thanks to Matt Susko for sending us these pictures. They were found in a collection associated with LeRoy F Purtell of the 78th Fighter Control Squadron, 63rd Fighter Wing, 12th Air Force, and show the award of a Bronze Star to an unknown airman. If anyone recognises the airman please get in touch (using the Contact Us link below)
