4.5in Gun near Caen
Here we see a British 4.5in gun firing on German positions around Caen during Operation Epsom (26-30 June 1944). Although the operation failed to achieve it's main offensive objectives, it did force the Germans to commit their last reserves to the defence of Caen, preventing them from launching a large scale counterattack on the beachhead, or from moving armoured divisions west to face the Americans.
