British soldier with 40mm Bofors AA Gun

Here we see a British soldier standing by the breech end of a 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft gun, showing just how complex the mount for these guns was.

The original wartime caption, published in May 1944, was 'A British soldier, standing at the breech of his gun, takes a look through his field-glass at the enemy-occupied French coast, possibly at one of the points at which landings may be made when the allied forces open their attack on fortress Europe.' This may well count as a minor part of the deception plan, as that would imply he was somewhere near Dover looking at the Pas de Calais.
