240mm Howitzer firing, Fifth Army, Italy, 1944
Here we see a US 240mm Howitzer of the US Fifth Army firing somewhere on the Cassino front during 1944. The white streak to the right of the breach is the firing lanyard - you wouldn't want to be too close to this gun when it was firing! The whiter part of the barrel shows how far the gun recoils when it is fired.
