Map of the Solomon Islands

Map of the Solomon Islands
Map of the Solomon Islands, the site of one of the longest campaigns of the Second World War. The campaign began with the Japanese occupation of Bougainville in March 1942. The Allies were forced to act when the Japanese began to build an airfield on Guadalcanal during the summer of 1942. The allied counterattack began with the invasion of Guadalcanal in August 1942, the start of the long battle for that island. The campaign continued throughout 1943, and centred around the New Georgia campaign (30 June-5 August 1943 for the main campaign, which ended with the fall of Munda), and the invasion of Bougainville in November 1943.
