The Northrop P-61G was the unofficial designation given to sixteen Black Widow night-fighters converted to perform as weather reconnaissance aircraft. The conversion as carried out by Douglas Aircraft at Tulsa, and involved stripping the guns, night camouflage and radar from standard P-61Bs and replacing it with General Electric APS-10 weather radar. Fourteen of the sixteen aircraft began operations with the 4185th AAF Base Unit, at Independence, Kansas, before during 1946 being scattered amongst a number of research projects, most notably project THUNDERSTORM.
